Key Stage 3

In Art and Design, students explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. In art, craft and design, students reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives.

Key Stage 4  

What will my child learn in Art and Design?

In Art and Design students start their coursework Portfolio Unit. In key stage 4 themes are’ Surfaces’ and an Art Investigation. They develop skills in a range of media including drawing, acrylic paints and printmaking. Students learn how to develop research skills and how to express their own opinions of Art.

Key Stage 5

What will my child learn in A-Level Art & Design?

Excellent facilities and specialist teaching make Art and Design at 14:19 Abingdon an attractive prospect.  The course explores a wide range of ideas using varied techniques and media.

You will work from a variety of first and second-hand sources across a range of themes including natural and man-made environments, the figure and still life. Individual themes are developed for both the coursework and exam elements.

The endorsed Art and Design syllabus covers a wide range of areas including Fine Art, 3D and Textiles.   Fine Art course focuses mainly on painting, drawing and mixed media, but also incorporates other elements such as Animation, Film and Photography.

AS/A Level Art is assessed by coursework: personal investigation and study (50%), and through a timed, externally set assignment at the end of the course (50%).  Analysis and investigation into past and present arts practise is also part of the course.  You will visit exhibitions to gain an understanding of contemporary and past arts.  The work is always varied and includes group discussion and tutorial teaching. Studios are always open for use in study time.
